Every Product Starts as a Doodle
>
People often assume that 3D printing is mostly about the technology — the printers, the software, the materials. And sure, all of that matters. But the part that actually determines whether a product is good or just… there? That’s the design process.
At YHprints, every product goes through the same journey, and it usually starts with something pretty low-tech: a sketch on paper.
Step 1: The Idea (and the Napkin Sketch)
>
Most of our product ideas come from real problems. “My phone keeps falling off my desk.” “I can never find my glasses.” “This cable situation is out of control.” The best products solve actual frustrations, not invented ones.
Before we open any software, we sketch. Rough proportions, basic shapes, how it might sit on a desk. This takes five minutes and saves hours later. If something doesn’t look right on paper, it definitely won’t look right as a 3D model.
Step 2: CAD Modeling
>
This is where the idea becomes a real object. We use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to build a precise 3D model of the product. Every dimension, every curve, every notch for a cable or slot for a phone is planned out here.
The tricky part isn’t making it look good — it’s making it print well. 3D printing has rules. Overhangs need support. Walls need to be thick enough to be sturdy but thin enough to print quickly. Holes need to be the right size for their purpose. A design that looks perfect on screen can fail completely if it doesn’t account for how the printer actually works.
Step 3: The First Test Print
>
This is always the humbling part. We send the model to the printer, wait a few hours, and then see what actually came out. Sometimes it’s great. More often, there’s something that needs adjusting. A slot that’s too tight. A base that wobbles. A surface that came out rougher than expected.
Test prints are not failures — they’re information. Each one tells us what to change, and we go back to the CAD model to iterate.
Step 4: Choosing the Right Filament
>
Different products need different materials. A desk organizer needs to be rigid and durable, so we use standard PLA. Something that needs a bit of flex, like a cable clip, might get a slightly different formulation. Color matters too — we choose colors that feel warm and fit with the cozy aesthetic we’re going for.
Step 5: Quality Check
>
Before anything goes in the shop, we use it. A phone stand has to actually hold a phone at an angle that’s comfortable to see. A cable clip has to grip without damaging the cable. A planter has to hold water without leaking. We test everything ourselves because if it doesn’t work for us, it won’t work for you.
From Our Workshop to Your Desk
>
The whole process from idea to finished product usually takes a few days to a week. It’s not fast compared to ordering something from a factory, but that’s kind of the point. Each product is thoughtfully designed, tested, and made with care. We think you can feel the difference.
